Positivity

J's most recent post on her blog Fatshionable reminded me of a positive fat experience I thought I'd share.

My older sister was visiting over the September long weekend and on the way to the farmer's market we popped into a nearby boutique. My sister is much smaller than me and browsed the clothing fearlessly, while I began browsing through the racks wih a knowledge that none of it would fit. Now, this isn't a run-of-the-mill clothing store, it's a cool boutqiue with things like jewellery, scarves, incense, wall art, lamp shades, purses, pillows, and then some shoes and clothing on top of that. Because of that, and because of how the store does it's buying, for each style, their is only one size. Perhaps one dress will be a size 8, and another a 12, but you can't go looking for "your size." Optimistically, I grabbed a top that had some potential. Once I was in the change room, the sales assistant began grabbing more and more tops for me. "This one has more stretch and is a bit looser, try it on!" It was wonderful. She recognised that I was larger than most of the clothes they had, did so in a non-judgemental way, and then did the best she could to grab tops that were looser and stretchier and thus with the potential to fit. I'm always nervous when I'm in a store that doesn't carry above a size 16, but this sales assistant was so wonderful. Some of the tops did fit, and were cute, but I didn't buy them as I didn't have much spending money. I did, however, leave the store with a wonderful feeling. And I'll definately be back again whren I have some money to spend.

  1. Aw this is a great story! My sister is sweet but she doesn't really realize that she will take me to stores where normally nothing will fit. Great customer service is always so important. I shouldn't have to feel weird/timid in a store.
