Perfect Pumps

Because of my large feet, it's rare that I find shoes that fit me in thrift stores. It's even rarer that any shoes that fit are cute. I look longingly at the size 8's and want to weep at the array of gorgeous footwear I will never own. I was super excited then, when I found these gorgeous shoes in size 11W. They fit wonderfully, and the detailing on the toes and the mini wedge are to die for. I am in love, I tell you. I'm ready to pair these babies with skirts, dresses, and skinny jeans. I do have to give them a bit of a cleaning still.

I was only in the thrift store for 10 minutes (we had just stopped by to drop off a donation while running errands), and so I am itching to go thrifting for real. Next weekend perhaps?

Clothes! Oh my!

I'm not the best blogger, now am I? I've gotten a little worse at blogging throughout the week, and a little better at wasting time. Now, I read a lot of political and fashion-orientated blogs, but I don't consider that a waste of time. Things like FML, Comixed, Fail Blog, Passive-Agressive Notes and Tetris, however, are all huge wastes of time. There is no way around it. I consider myself a lover of witty humour but I admit to having actually laughed out loud at many "fails" and "lols" this week.

First up is something I wore this past Monday. I wasn't sure about this shirt and whether it fit or not. It fits in the way that I can get it on, but it's kind of snug. Bad snug, or just feminine-fitting t-shirt snug? I much prefer over-sized/loose-fitting tops (is this personal preference or fat-girl insecurity?). I threw on this American Apparel cardigan because it was the closest cardi in my reach, but I thought the lilac and teal went well together. The cardigan fits me in the arms/shoulders/back but I can't button it up over my stomach. That's alright, I'll wear it unbuttoned! I doubt I'm the only fat person who does this.

I haven't worn this dress out yet because I can't bare to pair it with tights and boots, but I couldn't wait a minute longer to show it to you. I was in Pennington's for only a few minutes during their after-Christmas sale and saw this dress. I'd never seen it in the store before, they only had one, it was in my size, and it was only $8. The fashion gods wear clearly staring down on me that day. I love the retro feel with regards to the shape and the itty-bitty polka dots. As you can tell, come Spring, I plan on pairing it with flats, a colourful cardigan, and a statement necklace.

Stripes

To some, horizontal stripes are a fat girl's worst enemy, but to this fat girl, they're the best friend that you're secretly in love with.

I bought this shirt in a 3X from Addition-Elle for about $20 during their Boxing Week sale. I really like it, but like most of Addition-Elle's items, it wasn't worth its original price of around $50. These jeans are the Diva Skinny jeans from Old Navy in Dark Blue and a size 18. They do stretch out after wear but they are great. Maybe it's just my hips and legs but I love the way they fit (I should mention that my hips are 52"). I will definitely be buying these in a few other colours as Old Navy jeans are very hit or miss but when they work they really work for my body. And who can say no at only $40? The scarf is second hand and really fabulous, if a bit itchy (and I only threw it on for the photo).

I wasn't sure about posting this next picture because it really shows of my lumps and bumps but after seeing the following picture on Adipositivity I knew that it was fate of some sorts that I share this fattyfat photo with the online world.

ASOS Curve

Asos Curve has launched today. Exciting, no?

Check out YFF, Musings of a Fatshionista, and Saks in the City for three great reviews and beautiful photos.

I'm also incredibly happy to report that Asos ships to Canada for only $6! Express shipping is $12. This makes me all kinds of delighted, especially when Torrid's shipping is easily about $50.

I'm especially looking forward to trying the jeggings, the above bloggers all wear them so well.

What, if anything, is catching your eye?

Nail Polish

Coloured nails aren't something that I'm always totally on board with, but lately I'm liking them more and more. Something about Gabi's mint green nails, a special someone's wonderful coloured nails, and her appreciation of mine have me swooning. Wanting something special, I swung by a local drug store and picked up this shade. It's a neat colour, but I'm less then impressed. It's too sheer, too shimmery, and does that thing where instead of drying hard it stays tacky and rubs off. Ick.

After a look at Opi's website and a quick Google search, I've found some colours I'm dying to try. As you can tell, the colour I'm looking for is a mid-tone purple or mauve bordering on dull.

Cat Eye Glasses

Today I tried on a pair of dark purple plastic Cutler and Gross cat eye glasses and they were all kinds of fabulous. The shade of purple was stunning, there were two little stars in each outer corner, and they fit my big head wonderfully. They were a bit of out my price range at about $450, but I am in love. Unfortunately I can't find a photo (are Cutler and Gross too high-end for stock photos?) so you'll have to trust me on this. Perhaps next time I'll try to snap a photo to show you all. Now I have to start begging my parents, or find a pair of wonderful vintage-inspired (not actually vintage) cat eye glasses that fit my big face and are less than $250. It's been over two years since I last bought a pair of glasses, and so I do need a new pair this spring...

Now did Marilyn Monroe ever know how to look chic in glasses.

Movies

I'm not always the biggest movie watcher out there, but the urge to watch and talk about movies occasionally pops up.

Here it is, and heere are some movies I've watched recently and/or really love.

Whole New Thing (Queer! Canadian! Wonderful music!)

Aaron Webber is just incredible.

It's no surprise that I love Zooey Deschanel, but I'm also a huge fan of Joseph Gordon-Levitt, which brings me to...

"Will you be my Valentine?"

Tonight, while coming home from a coffee shop downtown, I was sexually harassed. Again. This is certainly not the first it’s happened, and not the first time it’s happened on my way home from the same coffee shop. But this may have been the tamest thing I’ve heard as sexual harassment. “Will you be my Valentine?”It was so tame, in fact, that I might not even consider it sexual harassment if it hadn’t been yelled from strangers in a moving vehicle downtown late on a Saturday night while I was alone. “Will you be my Valentine?” It’s something a well-intentioned child would ask the cute boy in their class. Or perhaps something someone would ask their current romantic partner with a bit of an ironic smile. What should one do with a comment so tame? It certainly doesn’t make me want to scream and scream and scream, wear radical sandwich boards, and start throwing punches. In fact, I’m not sure what I want to do. I’ve asked my father about picking me up so I don’t have to wait outside alone, but the onus shouldn’t be on me to avoid sexual harassment.

This also has me thinking about the climate in which these incidents happen. Generally, the attack comes from a large group, of both men and women in their early 20’s, who are in the safety of a vehicle. Alcohol might be involved. Generally, the victim is outside, walking or waiting for a bus, alone. The harassment certainly sounds like peer pressure and the gross group dynamics of young people colliding, but I wonder if perhaps class privilege plays into this. I do doubt that this would happen if I too were in the safety of a vehicle. Do I deserve harassment because I need to take the bus home?* Should getting home safely be a luxury?*

Do you know what I would really like for Valentine’s Day this year, more than chocolate and roses and red wine? The eradication of sexual harassment, sexual assault, and rape. A world were young women can take the bus home late at night alone on a Saturday night and not think they were lucky to have been left alone.

* No and NO!

You-tube user wojo4hitz has some very good videos of Tegan & Sara's concert (albiet the one in Calgary). I thought some of my favourites would be worth sharing.

V Love U Just the Way U R

I'm sure most of you have heard about V Magazine's upcoming size issue, and I'm sure you've seen some of the sneak peaks (if not go here, here, and here. Thank you models.com!)

Here's the latest sneak peak. It's pretty fabulous if you ask me.

I feel like this shoot does the best at showing a wider variety of models in one singular photo shoot. What are your thoughts? Click to view the entirety of the shoot.

P.S. Was I the only one whose mind was blown that the icky Karl Lagerfeld actually photographed Day 4?

P.P.S. If I'm correct the issue hit U.S. newstands yesterday. Has anyone got their hands on a copy yet?

Mixing prints and (even more) T&S

I haven't been feeling particularly fashionable as of late, but I thought I'd take advantage of the tegan & Sara concert Monday night and dress up a little. I've been wanting to try mixing stripes and floral for a while now, and I thought the stripes on this shirt were subtle enough that it wasn't overwhelming.

Owl pin - a gift to my mother from my father, and then passed down to me

The concert was really incredible. An Horse opened for them, who I'd never heard before but really liked. What I bought at the concert

T-shirt! I'll admit that their current t-shirt designs aren't my favourite, though I did like this one. What is good though is that the shirts now come in up to a unisex XXL. I have a 52" bust, 46" waist, and 53" tummy and as you can see the XXL fits quite loosely. In the past they only had their t-shirts in up to a unisex L. It's also great that all of their designs are printed on both girly and unisex shirts, unlike Ani Difranco who has some really cool designs that only come in girly sizes.

I cut the neck off, as you can see it needs a little touching up.

Warmth!

Today was only 0˚C (I'm sure some of you are cringing at the "only") and so I was able to go it a trench coat and flats. Glorious! A friend and I spent the afternoon on Whyte Ave, which is a street in the University/Theatre district with about 10 blocks of trendy shopping and good eats. I'm sure every city has it's own equivalent.

You've seen this all before, but still, what I wore.

Tonight is movie night at the Pride Centre, and we'll be watching Bound. It's supposed to be quite sexy and quite violent. Time will tell as to whether or not I like it. I have had a very good day and hope it only improves.
